There are some concerns over the validity of the species (Musser and Carleton 2005,  Monadjem et al. 2015).

Listed as Data Deficient since, this species appears to be very restricted to a specialised habitat. But it is only known so far from two localities, and there are several collections from both places. The habitat extends into Angola, so the species is likely to have a wider range than is currently known. There is habitat loss, but this is mainly confined to areas around urban settlements. Further field surveys are required to determine the true extent of occurrence and the intensity and extent of the habitat loss.

This species is known only from the type locality (Zambezi) and Solwezi in Zambia, but it is quite probably more widespread and presumably ranges into Angola.

The abundance of this species is not known, but there are specimens in several collections.

It is found in dry Cryptocephalum Forest (a very dense type of forest). This unique habitat extends into Angola, but it is not found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The forest is being cleared, particularly near urban areas, for charcoal production.

There are no protected areas in this region. There is a need to maintain areas of suitable forest habitat for this species.
