Panaspis maculicollis was first recognized by Jacobsen (1989) as a cryptic species related to P. wahlbergii, and was described by Jacobsen and Broadley (2000) based on differences in the average number of scale rows at mid-body, body patterning (particularly on the neck) and male colouration during the breeding season. Older specimen records and pre-2000 references to P. wahlbergii should be carefully checked using the key provided by Jacobsen and Broadley (2000). In a recent phylogentic study of the Panaspis group, previous unknown cryptic diversity was documented (Medina et al. 2016). According to Medina et al. (2016), 'P. maculicollis' group is comprised of at least two cryptic species. Further taxonomic work is needed to describe the above cryptic diversity.

Widespread and found in several protected areas; therefore assessed as Least Concern.

Found in Zambia, Zimbabwe, northern Botswana, Namibia (Caprivi Strip), southern Angola, South Africa, and southern Mozambique (Branch 1998, Jacobsen and Broadley 2000, Medina et al. 2016). 

The population is considered stable.

A terrestrial species, very similar in habits to Panaspis wahlbergii and known to occur in sympatry with the latter in several areas. Found in open or rocky savanna (Jacobsen and Broadley 2000).

There are no substantial threats to this species.

There is no known utilization or trade.

No direct conservation measures are needed. Populations occur in some protected areas.
