This species is considered Least Concern as it has a wide distribution, in an area that is relatively unaffected by anthropogenic change.

In eastern Africa this species is known from Gabiro and Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda; elsewhere it is found in Angola, northwest Zambia and southern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) (Spawls et al. 2018). A record has been reported from southwestern Tanzania, but this is not based on a voucher specimen and its presence in this country is therefore considered uncertain. It ranges from around 800 to 1,800 m asl.

This can be a common species in the DRC, with a largely stable population.

This is a terrestrial species, largely associated with moist savanna, wetlands and swampland (Broadley et al. 2003). It is an egg laying species. Diet is presumably mostly comprised of amphibians (Broadley et al. 2003).

There are no known threats to this species. Currently, the area where this species is found is not heavily impacted by human development.

There is no information on any use or trade in this species.

This species is present in Akagera National Park in Rwanda (Spawls et al. 2018), and occurs in some additional protected areas (e.g. Upemba National Park in DRC).
