Assessed as Least Concern in view of its wide distribution, tolerance of a broad range of habitats, and its presumed large population.

This widespread species ranges from southern South Africa in the Western Cape province eastwards through the Eastern Cape province to coastal KwaZulu-Natal province, and inland to the borders of Lesotho, and the Drakensberg escarpment of Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces and Eswatini, then northwards to western Mozambique and the Eastern Highlands in Zimbabwe. This species' presence in Zambia has been mentioned (Channing et al. 2022) but needs verification. The northern subpopulation in Zimbabwe and Mozambique is isolated by the lowlands of the Limpopo River Valley (Poynton and Broadley 1985). In South Africa, it appears to be absent from high elevation areas of Lesotho. It may be extant in other areas of Lesotho and Botswana. The range map has been greatly refined to exclude unsuitable habitat and exclude erroneous localities (W. Conradie pers. comm. July 2024). It occurs from sea level to 1,100 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 1,679,003 km².

It is a common species.

It occurs in forest, fynbos heath land, thickets, grassland and savanna. The eggs are laid singly in shallow water on the edges of streams or other bodies of water with grassy margins. It can also be found in well-vegetated human-made dams, ponds and irrigation canals. It can tolerate disturbance and has been found in urban gardens and plots, and in dams in forestry plantations. It breeds by larval development.

It is an adaptable species that is not facing any significant threats, except in localized situations.

There are no reports of this species being utilised.
