Justification
Despite its relatively limited distribution, this species occurs in large populations, and there are no apparent threats. It is listed as Least Concern. Research is required on its biology, ecology and phylogeny.
Geographic Range Information
This species is endemic to Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island (Australia), and northern New South Wales on the east coast of Australia in the south-western corner of the Pacific Ocean (Steene 1978). It is found at depths from 1-15 m.
Population Information
It is generally common (G.R. Allen pers. comm. 2006). It is abundant in the lagoon at Lord Howe Island (Steene 1978). There is no data on population trends, but no reason to suspect it is declining.
Habitat and Ecology Information
This species has been observed in areas of rich coral growth in lagoons and on outer reefs (Steene 1978). There is no data on the biology, ecology or phylogeny of this species.
Threats Information
Collection is limited and is not considered to be impacting the global population. It is unknown to what extent this species may be reliant on coral reefs and corals. The coral reef habitats within its known range have not been substantially affected by climate change and other disturbances. There appear to be no major threats to this species.
Use and Trade Information
Potentially of interest to aquarium trade (G.R. Allen pers. comm. 2006). It is relatively unknown to European and American aquarists (Steene 1978).
Conservation Actions Information
There appear to be no species-specific conservation measures in place. The geographic range of this species is partly within the Lord Howe Island Marine Park.
