Bactris herrenana is a small palm, mostly with solitary stems of 2–3 m height. The species is endemic to Costa Rica, restricted along the south-western Pacific slope, mostly in lowland forest. It grows in tropical lowland rain forest to wet premontane forest, at elevations of 50–950 m; and according to the known collections, the species seems to be scarce or rare. Flowering is from February to May (Grayum 2003). The major threats to this species are deforestation and habitat destruction through conversion to agriculture and plantations; as well as some illegal logging activities affecting the habitat of some subpopulations in the Golfo Dulce region. Due to its small extent of occurrence (EOO = 4,133.82 km²), and area of occupancy (AOO= 44 km²), few locations (8–9) known, very fragmented or patchy distribution within a very narrow altitudinal gradient, and its habitat quality being affected by ongoing threats, this species is assessed as Endangered (EN).

This palm species is endemic to Costa Rica, restricted along the southwestern Pacific slope, mostly in lowland forest.

There is no information about population size, however, the known subpopulations are separated by large distances and fragmented habitat. Therefore, it is unlikely seed dispersal will take place between the subpopulations, making this species severely fragmented.

This species is known from some protected areas such as Parque Nacional La Cangreja, Parque Nacional Piedras Blancas, Reserva Forestal Golfo Dulce and Parque Nacional Corcovado.
