Acomys minous is a poorly defined species. Likely to be part of Acomys cahirinus but currently recognized as valid (see Barome et al. 2001, and Musser and Carleton 2005 for discussion). Studies by Frynta et al. (2010) and Giagia-Athanasopoulou et al. (2011) also support that this is a subspecies of A. cahirinus.

Acomys minous is endemic to Greece (Crete), where it is likely to have a small extent of occurrence (EOO). At present, there are no known threats and no reason to suspect population declines or range contractions. The species is listed as Data Deficient in view of the continuing uncertainty over its taxonomic validity.

Acomys minous is endemic to the island of Crete, Greece, where it occurs from sea level to 500-600 m (Zima 1999). This taxon is likely to be a relatively recent introduction from the Near East, and may be conspecific with A. dimidiatus (Barome et al. 2001, Wilson and Reeder 2005). Krystufek and Vohralik (2009) synonymised with A. cahirinus. However, Renaud et al. (2020) found three populations representing three different haplotypes with different karyotypes and morphology, probably due to multiple introductions.

Little is known about the status and population trends of this species. It may be common in suitable habitats, and there are no reports of population declines (Zima 1999).

It is found in arid areas, including scrubby hillsides and rocky slopes. It may be found in close proximity to human habitation, and sometimes enters houses, especially during the winter. Its diet is predominantly herbivorous, supplemented by some animal items (Zima 1999).

It is not believed to face any major threats at present (B. Kryštufek pers. comm. 2006).

The species is not used or traded.

It occurs in a number of protected areas. Research is required to clarify its taxonomic status and determine population trends.
