This species was previously placed as Brachypteroma ottomanum. However, it is now recognised that the former synonym, Dolocerus reichii is the pre-existing senior name.

This species is very rare in most of its range (except for Italy and the southern Balkan coast). It is listed as Least Concern in view of the wide distribution of its exclusive host (Hedera helix). No threats are known, and it has a tolerance for a large diversity of habitats. The reason for its rarity and population fragmentation is still unknown. The possibility of an ongoing expansion northward to Europe should be investigated.

Dolocerus reichii has a distribution covering southern and eastern Europe and the Near East (Bense 1995, Tavakilian and Chevillotte 2018, Hoskovec et al. 2021).

Its presence is confirmed in Switzerland, in the southern part of the Ticino, at Sottoceneri (1993 to 2011) (Germann 2000, Monnerat et al. 2015). In France, after old citations from the Mont-Cenis (Savoy, some observations from <1884 to 1954) and some old misidentification in the north of the Alps, Brustel et al. (2002) and then Berger (2012) haven't retained the species for the country. But in 2016 D. reichii was repeatedly observed in the Alpes-Maritimes (Lemaire and Gros 2016), and again in 2021 in the Alsace region, close to the German border (Touroult 2022).

In Germany, three localities have also been published recently on a citizen science website, confirming the species in this country, northern to the Alsace locality (Touroult 2022), and in Berlin (Esser 2014). In Italy, D. reichii is widely present according to Sama (2006), including localities in Sicily (Altadonna 2012) and Sardinia (Bazzato et al. 2017). It has been recently found in European Türkiye, in the Atatürk arboretum (Albayati et al. 2016), however, perhaps the origin of the species here requires confirmation.

In Asia it occurs in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and the Anatolia region of Türkiye (Bense 1995, Tavakilian and Chevillotte 2018, Hoskovec et al. 2021).

The species is widespread but, except in Italy (many localities, Sama 2006) and the southern Balkans (reported as abundant by Siering et al. 2016), it is always reported as a rare or very rare species. In the French and Swiss Alps, it has been a very rare species for decades. It seems to have been observed recently in some new localities situated north to the previously known range as given by Bense (1995). For some authors, this would most likely be a recent expansion dynamic of the species (Touroult 2022). The population trend is considered to be stable.

Dolocerus reichii is an obligate saproxylic species. It lives in forests and urban environments, rural gardens, etc. Its exclusive host is Hedera helix, from which adults have been reared on several occasions (Bazzato et al. 2017, Berger 2017). Reports from other deciduous trees are to be confirmed (Allemand et al. 2009).

The larvae are xylophagous, their development takes two to three years (Hoskovec et al. 2021). Adults are attracted (and mostly seen) on white flowers.

This species has only been found associated with Hedera helix which is an abundant species so no threats are expected to the beetle.

Saproxylic Coleoptera tend to be popular with beetle collectors although trade is rarely an issue, the only exceptions being a few larger species of more dramatic form or colour.

This species is known from protected areas. No special conservation measures are in progress or needed.

Observations by amateurs have been raised recently but the species is still difficult to identify by non-specialists. A professional survey of citizen science forums and platforms is needed.
