Mediterranean regional assessment: Least Concern (LC)

Brachypteroma ottomanum occurs in southern Europe mainly in Italy and the Adriatic coasts, and in Turkey. This species is assessed as Least Concern in view of the wide distribution of suitable habitat (Hedera helix), its overall large and stable population, and the fact that there are no major threats to it.

This species occurs in southern Europe mainly in Italy and the Adriatic coasts (Bense 1995). In Switzerland the record is from Ticino (Germann 2000). It has been very rarely but repeatedly recorded in France near the border with Italy; the most recent record in France is 1953. It has been recorded in Turkey from three provinces, in the west and south-west. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is ca 1 million km² and its area of occupancy (AOO) is likely to be larger than 2,000 km².

The species is widespread throughout Italy and the Balkan countries on to Turkey. There is little information available on the abundance or trends of this species, but the most recent National Red List in Italy classified the species as Least Concern (Audisio et al. 2014). There is no evidence that the population is declining, and it is therefore considered to be stable and large.

This is an obligate saproxylic species. It may be polyphagous in deciduous trees, however only Hedera helix has been reported as a host until now. 

This species has only been found on Hedera helix which is abundant in Europe. There are no major threats to this species.

Saproxylic Coleoptera tend to be popular with beetle collectors although trade is rarely an issue, the only exceptions being a few larger species of more dramatic form or colour. This species is not utilised.

There is no available information on the conservation of this species, but it is known to occur in protected areas.
