This species has been recorded from the eastern slope of Malay Peninsula, in southern Thailand at Toh Daeng Peat swamp forest, Narathiwat Province and in north western Malaysia (Kelantan), within a total area of less than 15,000 km². It is locally uncommon throughout its range where it is threatened by peatland habitat degradation from deforestation, encroachment and droughts. It is listed as Vulnerable due to its limited geographic range, small number of locations, and continuing decline in habitat quality and range.

This species inhabits stenotopic to peat swamp forest edges, in slow flowing or still streams.

Peatland habitat degradation from deforestation, encroachment and droughts are the main threats to this species. Overfishing for aquarium trade is a secondary threat.

This species is used occasionally in the aquarium trade.
