The taxonomic status of this species is in need of clarification, since the type series was collected around a century prior to the publication of its description, and includes only small-bodied, possibly subadult, individuals (Elvira 1987, Marić 2019). Moreover, it has not been included in recent molecular analyses involving other members of the genus Chondrostoma (Geiger et al. 2014, Schönhuth et al. 2018).

The Skadar Nase has not been observed since the late 19^th century, despite numerous attempts to find it. This species is therefore assessed as Extinct (but see 'Taxonomic Notes').

This species was endemic to Lake Skadar (sq. Liqeni i Shkodrës; cnr. Skadarsko jezero) and the affluent Morača River system in Albania and Montenegro.

Nine individuals of this species were collected in the late 19^th century and it has not been observed since, despite regular surveys since the 1980s plus the existence of a commercial fishery on Lake Skadar.

Oligotrophic and oligomictic Lake Skadar is the most extensive freshwater wetland in the Balkan region, with a surface area that seasonally fluctuates between c. 370 km² and c. 530 km². It is situated in a tectonic karstic cryptodepression and is rather shallow, with an average depth of c. five metres and maximum depth of c. 60 metres. The lake is fed by numerous sub-lacustrine karstic springs which are distributed around its periphery, and a series of affluent rivers of which the largest is the Morača. It drains to the Adriatic Sea via the short Bojana (sq. Bunë) River, which also receives water from the Drin (sq. Drini; mk. Дрим) River system and thus connects Lake Skadar to Lake Ohrid (sq. Liqeni i Ohrit; mk. Охридско Езеро). The precise origin of the lake remains unclear to an extent, but it is understood to have comprised a much larger wetland until c. 1,200 years ago.

This species may have inhabited the lake itself but probably entered fast-flowing reaches of tributary rivers to spawn.

The reasons for this species' extinction are unknown, but could plausibly be linked to overfishing and the introduction of non-native fish species. The Lake Skadar basin is currently occupied by the Ohrid Nase (Chondrostoma ohridanum), which some authors have suggested drove the extinction of the Skadar Nase through interspecific competition and/or introgressive hybridisation after entering the lake basin via the Drin River system.

This species may have been exploited commercially, but few details are available.
