This species is a tree endemic to the swamp forests of New Guinea, where it has been recorded from the Lorentz River in Indonesian New Guinea and around the Vailala, Era and Purari rivers in the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea. It has an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 6,607 km² and the area of occupancy (AOO) is estimated as only 20 km², which fall within thresholds for a threatened category under criteria B1 and B2, respectively. However, based on satellite imagery and land use data of the known localities, it appears that this species' habitat is still extensive and intact. Though its population size is unknown, it has been described as forming pure stands along riverbanks, indicating it is locally common, particularly in the Gulf province. Based on the lack of habitat loss at the known localities and the absence of any known direct threats, its population is suspected to be stable. This species is not considered to be severely fragmented and the use of locations can not be justified due to the lack of apparent threats. It has also been recorded from a major protected area (Lorentz National Park). It is therefore assessed as Least Concern. Targeted surveys are recommended in order to determine the population size of this species and also to better understand its distribution. This will give a better understanding of its conservation status. Monitoring of its habitat should also be carried out, as there are multiple logging concessions at the known localities in the Gulf province, meaning these areas are potentially vulnerable to future habitat loss and degradation.

This species is endemic to New Guinea, where it has been recorded from the Lorentz River in Indonesian New Guinea and around the Vailala, Era and Purari rivers in the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea. It has only been recorded at low elevations, from sea level up to 5 m asl.

There is no information on the population size of this species. However, around the mouth of the Vailala River in the Gulf Province, it was described as forming dense thickets (Stone 1987). It forms pure stands on the inside curves of river banks in both the Gulf (including the Era River - Croft and Vinas # LAE 61301) and Western provinces (Jebb 1992). Based on the good condition of habitat at all of the known localities, the population is suspected to be stable at present.

This species is a tree which grows up to 14 m tall on large, aerial stilt roots on muddy riverbanks and freshwater tidal or seasonally flooded swamp forests. It appears to be highly adapted to growth on riverbanks, possibly being rheophytic or an obligate component of this habitat type (Gressit 1982). The flowers have been observed with many Nitidulid beetles and earwigs present and small crabs have also been observed in the leaf axils on adult trees (Stone 1987). It has been recorded from the Southern New Guinea Lowland Rain Forests and Southern New Guinea Freshwater Swamp Forests ecoregions (Dinerstein et al. 2017).

There are no known direct threats to this species. Satellite imagery and land use data from Global Forest Watch (2021) shows that there is still extensive intact habitat around the Vailala, Purari and Era Rivers. However, all of the known localities fall within logging concessions (Shearman et al. 2009) and therefore may be vulnerable to future deforestation. Similarly, the Lorentz River falls within Lorentz National Park and the habitat here appears to be extensive and relatively undisturbed.

There are no recorded uses for this species.

This species has been recorded from Lorentz National Park (UNEP-WCMC and IUCN 2021). There are no ex situ collections (BGCI 2021).
