Prometheum tymphaeum is confined to isolated summit areas of three mountain ranges of northern Greece, with a small area of occupancy (AOO; 20 km²) and extent of occurrence (EOO; 1,153 km²), along with a small number of independent localities supported by herbarium specimens (n=7) which correspond to a small number of distinct locations (n=4). In addition, it is inferred that there is continuing decline in habitat quality, at least at the site of its largest subpopulation on Mt Tymphi. Therefore, this local Greek endemic is assessed as Endangered B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii).

Prometheum tymphaeum is a local Greek endemic with isolated subpopulations confined to the summit areas (1,700–2,200 m) of three mountain ranges of northern Greece, namely Grammos (Pano Arena summit), Pindos national park (Mt Tymphi, Gamila and Astraka summit), and Askio (Hanlidou 2009, Strid 2022).

Prometheum tymphaeum is a rare species across its range in northern Greece (Hanlidou 2009). Although the size of the populations is often obscured due to vegetative propagation and clustering of rosettes, the total number of individuals has been estimated as below 2,500 individuals (Hanlidou 2009).

Prometheum tymphaeum grows as a rock-dweller on calcareous rocky screes, and crevices or stony (limestone) slopes, often occupying niches with northern orientation. Among the co-occurring species are Asplenium fissum, Dathoniastrum compactum, Edraianthus graminifolius, Saxifraga marginata, Minuartia pseudosaxifraga, Astragalus vesicarius, Galium degenii, etc. (Krigas 2009). Prometheum tymphaeum flowers during July and it often propagates vegetatively with new rosettes appearing close to old ones, thus the number of distinct individuals is obscured (Hanlidou 2009).

Prometheum tymphaeum is an attractive plant with succulent leaves and impressive inflorescences, thus it has a recognised ornamental value (e.g., https://www.srgc.net/filessub/journals//130.pdf), especially for plant hunters and amateur horticulturists of rare and unusual species (Stephenson 2002, Hanlidou 2009). Due to the very small size of the individuals, the small AOO and low number of distinct subpopulations (Hanlidou 2009), any overcollection of this attractive species is considered a threat. All areas where the species is found usually attract large numbers of mountain climbers, which may cause disturbance to the species' habitat.

As an attractive plant with succulent leaves and impressive inflorescences, it has value as an ornamental plant, especially for plant hunters and amateur horticulturists of rare and unusual species (Stephenson 2002, Hanlidou 2009). However, there are no specific data on use or trade of this species.

Although Prometheum tymphaeum has previously been assessed as Vulnerable (Hanlidou 2009), no species-specific conservation measures have been taken to date and no targeted awareness campaigns are in place. However, there is in-situ protection offered by a couple of Greek Natura 2000 sites namely GR2130001 (National Park of Vikos-Aoos) and GR1320002 (Koryfes Orous Grammos), hosting most of the subpopulations and their habitats. Although there are area-based management plans for the Greek Natura 2000 sites and general awareness-raising campaigns, almost nothing is known about its population size and the quality of its habitat (Hanlidou 2009); therefore, monitoring of the population size and trends as well as habitat trends is necessary. Ex-situ conservation in seed banks and botanic gardens and studying of its biological cycle are also advisable to safeguard against future population decline.
