Mastixia arborea is a 25 m high, sub-canopy evergreen tree species known from medium elevation rainforest of southern Western Ghats and Sri Lanka Biodiversity Hotspot in southwest India and Sri Lanka. It is found only at an elevation of 1,000-1,600m. The extent of occurrence (EOO) is 210,582 km². The species is represented by multiple subpopulations with a population of an estimated 32,000 mature individuals. The species is assessed as Least Concern (LC).

The species is known from the Western Ghats of southwest India and Sri Lanka.

The species is endemic to the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka Biodiversity hotspot. It has multiple subpopulations represented by 100 collection records with an estimated number of mature individuals of about 32,000.

Mastixia arborea is a large sub-canopy tree to 25 m in height. It is found in the medium elevation tropical rainforests forests of the mountain ranges of the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka mountain ranges between 1,000-1,600 m elevation. The species is a subcanopy tree of the regions associated with Actinodaphne campanulata, Alseodaphne semecarpifolia, Vateria indica, Palaquium ellipticum etc.

The habitats are cleared mainly for forestry and agro-monoculture plantations, dams and reservoirs. Improved protections in the Western Ghats mean these threats are mostly historical and currently minor threats. 

The species is used for its anti-inflammatory activities in traditional medicines.
