Varronia bahamensis is assessed as Least Concern based on its large extent of occurrence (620,200 km²) as well as the healthy and reproductive subpopulations. It also is subject to ex situ conservation measures, through seeds and living collections, both in its native range and at international institutions. It is protected in various areas throughout the Bahamas Archipelago within the national park system.
 
With this in mind, the pine and coastal areas that are key habitats of this species are some of the most threatened in the Caribbean. Further degradation of these areas could lead to decline in the population size of this species and push it into a threatened category. The protection of these habitats is key to its long-term protection.

Varronia bahamensis occurs in the Bahamas, Cuba, and the British Virgin Islands.  Within the Bahamas, it is a widespread species. Within Cuba, it is restricted to areas of the northeast coastal region. There is a subpopulation in the British Virgin Islands.

There are healthy and reproductive subpopulations of Varronia bahamensis throughout its range in the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Varronia bahamensis occurs as a shrub to a tree up to 7 m in height. It grows in dry broadleaf evergreen formation - forest/woodland/shrubland/dwarf shrubland on a limestone substrate, as well as in pine woodlands.

Varronia bahamensis is threatened by development of urban and recreational areas in its suitable habitat, invasive species, and habitat degradation from climate change.

This species has some uses by both humans and animals within its native range. There are reports of the branches of this species being used as a broom. The species is seen as an ornamental within the Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs (DEMA) Nursery on North Caicos. It is known to be an important food plant for the endemic Turks and Caicos Rock Iguana (Cyclura carinata) in Pine Cay (Iverson 1979). Additionally, the fruit of this plant may be considered bush food by some people within the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Within the Bahamas, Varronia bahamensis has been used medicinally to treat obstetric and gynaecological issues, pain, circulatory problems, and stop infections. It has been introduced into the horticultural trade in Florida and the Bahamas. It is attractive to birds and butterflies, and in the northern Bahamas it attracts the Atala Butterfly.

A collection of seed from the Turks and Caicos Islands has been stored in Kew's Millennium Seed Bank (T. Heller pers. comm. 2012). Additionally there was seed collected from New Providence, Bahamas for use in living collections at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (M. Corcoran pers. comm. 2012). Within the Turks and Caicos Islands, this species is grown as an ex situ collection in the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) nursery on North Caicos and in the Turks and Caicos National Museum Botanical and Cultural Garden. This species is protected within some of its range in the Turks and Caicos Islands at a Ramsar site on Middle and North Caicos Islands.

Within the Bahamas Varronia bahamensis occurs in multiple protected areas including Abaco National Park, Andros West Side National Park, Blue Holes National Park, Inagua National Park, Conception Island National Park, and Nature Center, Lucayan National Park and is grown in ex situ collections at the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve on Eleuthera.
