Allium calamarophilon is taxonomically related to Allium thessalicum and to Allium runemarkii, the latter also known from Evvia.

This species is endemic to Greece. It is assessed as Vulnerable (VU D1) due to an estimated small number of mature individuals (population size is estimated to be 250–1,000), all of them found in a single subpopulation. The species is still known from only from the type locality site.

This plant is an endemic to the island of Euboea (Evia), one of the largest islands in the Aegean Sea. The only currently known population was found on the eastern side of the island, northeast of the small town of Kymi, in 1981 (Phitos and Tzanoudakis 1981).

The area of the type locality was revisited during June 2023. The population includes 165 mature individuals restricted to an extremely small area. The surrounding area is largely inaccessible and additional individuals/subpopulations are likely to occur, but the total population is not likely to exceed 1,000 mature individuals.

The species grows at an altitude of 20–30 m asl on limestone cliffs that rise almost vertically from the sea.

It is considered that due to the inaccessibility of the site where the species occurs, no significant threats currently occur. However, the population size is extremely small, with all the known individuals in one subpopulation, and can be affected by stochastic events.

The species is not utilized.

The species was previously assessed as Data Deficient (Iatroú 2006).

Legally: This species is not included in any international conventions or national legislation.
In situ: There are no current measures in places. In fact, no species research or monitoring has taken place since the original postgraduate project (Phitos and Tzanoudakis 1981).
Ex situ: The species has been cultivated at the Experimental Botanical Garden of the University of Patras as part of a genetics research project, although due to recent financial constraints the project has stopped and the species is no longer cultivated.
