There is little information on the biological aspects of this species. However, due to a realtively wide distribution in high mountain rivers that are still pristine, the species is assessed as Least Concern.

This species is present in river drainages of Colombia (Eshmeyer 2014). In the Santander Department it is known from the Charalá creek, a tributary of the Fonce River in the Suárez River system (Castellanos Morales et al. 2011). Its type locality is Chapinero, Puente de Suba near Bogotá, in the plains of Bogotá at an elevation of approximately 2754 masl, in the Cundinamarca Department, Colombia (Mojica et al. 2006, Ferraris 2007, Alvarez-Leon et al. 2013, DosNacimento et al. 2017). There are publications (Alvarez-Leon et al. 2013) reporting the presence of this species for the rivers of the Andean region of Venezuela, but this information has not yet been confirmed, and most likely it is a misidentification.

Data on population size or trends are not available.

The bio-ecological aspects of this species are unknown. Its abundance is scarce, but it lives in clean undisturbed water, and is a benthophagous species that preys on crustaceans and aquatics insects (Castro-Rebolledo et al. 2014).

The presence of exotic species in natural aquatic environments generates a source of stress for the native ichthyofauna, due to the dispersal of parasites or viruses that cause diseases in native fish (Castro-Rebolledo et al. 2014). It may also generate biotic alterations caused by interspecific competition. For example, the Rainbow Trout that was introduced to Andean rivers (above 1200 masl) will feed on native fish (Tognelli et al. 2016).

This species has no known commercial importance.

There are no known plans for the conservation of this species or its habitat. Research should be conducted on population trends and distribution.
