Literature review and field research have shown that this species can be considered to be facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild. The extent of occurrence (EOO) for the species is estimated as 9,918 km² and the area of occupancy (AOO) is estimated as 76 km². Although the figure for AOO may represent an underestimate due to incomplete botanical inventory, the AOO is considered unlikely to exceed the 500 km² threshold for the Endangered category under criterion B2. The species is estimated to be known from three locations. Owing to the threat posed by expansion of recreational areas, and the extirpation of the species from historic localities at Geghard and Vanadzor, the EOO, AOO, area, quality, and extent of habitat, and number of locations are inferred to be experiencing continuing decline. The number of mature individuals is estimated to total about 85 mature individuals. Given this, the species is assessed as Endangered B2ab(i,ii,iii,iv); D.

Sorbus hajastana is a relict plant native to mid-montane–subalpine zones across Armenia and Georgia within the Caucasus Biodiversity Hotspot. In Armenia, it has been recorded from Sevan floristic region (Sevan peninsula, northeastern shore of the Lake Sevan, Artanish Peninsula) and Aparan floristic region (Mountain Arailer) (Takhtajan 1958, Nersesyan 2019). The species also grows on the northern slope of the Greater Caucasus in Khevsureti (Georgia) (Ketskhoveli 1980)․ It grows between 1,600–2,400 m asl.

Based on field observations, the number of mature individuals is estimated at 85 plants. The species has been extirpated from previously known sites of occurrences for this species in Geghard and Vanadzor, and a portion of the subpopulation near Sevan town (1947) has also been lost. Within extant subpopulations, the number of seedlings are observed to be low, with little regeneration. It is suspected that the population trend is decreasing due to habitat loss from expansion of nearby recreational zones and limited regeneration. More research is needed to investigate the extent of this decline.

The species grows from the mid-montane zone to subalpine belt on cliffs, rocky slopes, gorges, in forests, and among subalpine tall grasses along the treeline. It tends to grow in north and north-westerly aspects (Gabrielyan 1956, 1978).

The major threats to this species are expansion of recreational zones, unsustainable logging, fire, road construction and urban construction. Continued monitoring of the population status will be necessary to reveal the impacts of these threats.

The species is very ornamental. It has meliferous flowers and provides food for birds and bears. The species is also used as a medicinal plant by locals, but collections for commercial purposes are not known.

Part of the population grows in the Sevan National Park in Armenia (Tamanyan et al. 2010). Living collections have been established at multiple institutions for ex situ conservation (Akopian 2015). In situ population reinforcement has also been undertaken by the A. Takhtajyan Institute of Botany, National Academy of Sciences of Armenia in 2019 as part of the project “Conservation of Sorbus hajastana, a rare relict plant in Armenia’s middle mountain - subalpine zones” initiated by BGCI with funding from Foundation Franklinia (Nersesyan 2019). Seeds have been collected for long-term ex situ conservation and stored in the Seed Bank of Armenian Flora of the Institute of Botany and duplicated at the Millennium Seed Bank. Ex situ collections are available also from Seed bank of Georgia. The species is held in ten ex situ collections (BGCI 2022).
