This species ranges from Guyana to Colombia, with most collections from higher elevations in the Pakaraima Mountains of Guyana on sandstone soils up to 1,800 m. It has an extent of occurrence of 1,036,728 km² and an area of occupancy of at least 72 km². Some of the higher elevation Guiana Shield areas are likely to be impacted by gold-mining. Populations at lower elevations, near the coast or in the Rupununi savanna, are most likely to be impacted by infrastructure, logging, fire or other human activities. However, these factors are unlikely to impact a significant percentage of the total population distribution, if it indeed occurs across a vast continental area of (northern) South America. We thus assess this species as Least Concern (LC).

This species has been collected or observed mostly in the Pakaraima Mountains of Guyana and Venezuela and in the Colombian Andes (Antioquia, Corregimiento Carauta, Las Orquídeas National Natural Park, Tres Bocas sector, Río Tercero canyon). It is likely to occur in adjoining areas of Brazil. Based on the currently known records, it has been documented from 10–1,800 m elevation, with an extent of occurrence of 1,036,748 km² and an area of occurrence of 72 km².

This species is a tree up to 10 m tall. It occurs in a wide variety of habitats, from 10–1,800 m elevation. It appears to thrive on white sands soils and scrub forests of the Guiana Shield. Many collections are from riparian "gallery" forests, stream banks and marshy savannah/forest edges.

This species occurs across a wide variety of ecosystems and elevations. Populations in the Guyana highlands area are strongly threatened by dredge and artisanal mining. Populations growing in the Andes and at lower elevations along waterways are most threatened by urban development and logging, but also may fall prey to mining operations, changes to the climate, flooding or wildfires.
