The use of the genus name Lymnaea is still controversial, some considering it to be a lump genus that should be divided in the genera Galba, Lymnaea, Pseudosuccinea, Stagnicola, etc. The present assessment follows Brown (1994) who still uses Lymnaea as the generic name.

The species is very common and wide spread in the northern and eastern part of the Mediterranean region so has been assessed as Least Concern (LC). In European countries it is reaching the southern edge of the range with rare, relict sub-populations in the Magreb region of north-west Africa. It was formerly recorded in Egypt but has possibly disappeared long time ago (van Damme et al. 2010). The most southerly populations are found in suitable habitats in the Lebanon, Spain, Italy the Mediterranean islands and the Balkans.

 This holarctic species is present in the Mediterranean, where it is more widely distributed on the northern parts of the region, whereas in the southern part in northern Africa, it is confined to a few populations in the plains of the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The most southerly populations in Europe are found in suitable habitats in Spain, Italy, the Mediterranean islands and the Balkans. In South-west Asia, it is recorded from Jordan, Syria, Asiatic Turkey and Lebanon.

The reference from Egypt (Brown 1980) appears to be erroneous (see Brown 1994, Van Damme et al.  2010)

There is no trend data for the region, but in the northern part of the range is not known to be significantly declining. It is considered to be a vector of the sheep liver fluke F. hepatica.

The species is found in large permanent water bodies with clean water, slow-flowing rivers, canals, drainage dykes and lakes. Occasionally found in temporary habitats or closed ponds, but not typical habitats.

In north Africa the two major problems are water pollution and loss of water due to over-asbtraction of water for irrigation and domestic supplies. There are also problems in some parts of the range with the waste water causing sewage pollution. In the future increased frequency of drought and raised temperatures could impact water flow regimes throughout the Mediterranean zone. However there is a potential rescue effect through return as migrating water birds can carry it from the northern European populations, if suitable habitats remain.

The species is not known to be traded from wild populations, although occasionally snails can be bought for the aquarium trade and from garden centres.

The species could re-establish in sites where it is conserved, but these don't exist currently. It is a good looking species that is considered charismatic.
