It is found in Norway, Sweden, Denmark (mainland), Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Kalingrad region (Russia), Poland, Republic of Ireland (Eire), Great Britain (UK), Northern Ireland (UK), Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France (mainland), Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy (mainland), Bulgaria, Romania, Spain (mainland) and Portugal (mainland).

Outside Europe it is recorded from Turkey, and has recently been reported in Lebanon.

This is a freshwater species that is found in swamps and slow-flowing waters with abundant vegetation.
