This species is widespread and common throughout its range and does not face major threats.

Callitriche stagnalis occurs throughout Europe, from the Azores to Iceland and east to the western side of the Ural Mountains in Russia. It also occurs as an alien in North America, Australia, New Caledonia and New Zealand.

C. stagnalis appears to be fairly common throughout its range, although there is no specific information available on populations towards the periphery.

C. stagnalis is the typical Callitriche of poached ephemeral pools on woodland rides, heathland, wet corners of pasture, seepages, flushes, lake and river margins, and the margins of ditches. It is the most widespread member of the genus in Europe and can occur in most habitats, but less frequently in deep or fast-flowing water than in shallow, still or slow-flowing water. It has been recorded up to 1,000 m in Europe and up to 1,600 m in Morocco. C. stagnalis generally occurs with a mixture of terrestrial and amphibious species, most typically Agrostis stolonifera, Apium nodiflorum, Epilobium hirsutum, Isolepis setacea, Juncus articulatus, J. bufonius, J. bulbosus and J. effusus. It rarely occurs with truly aquatic plant species, but may be found with Alisma plantago-aquatica, Baldellia ranunculoides, Eleocharis acicularis, E. palustris, Lemna minor, Ranunculus flammula and R. peltatus. In the southern part of its range it frequently occurs with species typical of temporary pools, such as Juncus pygmaeus, Lythrum junceum and Mentha pulegium. C. stagnalis will, at times, occur with most other European Callitriche species. In particular, it frequently occurs with C. palustris and C. brutia var. brutia in ephemeral wetlands and on the exposed margins of lakes and pools with fluctuating water levels.

There are no known threats specific to this species, although any adverse effects on wetlands will affect populations of C. stagnalis.
