M. dasyphylla is native to central, eastern and southeastern Europe (Kurtto 2009, GRIN 2010). In Hungary, this species occurs in the Transdanubian Mountains (Pilis Mountain, Tapolca, Sümeg), south Transdanubia (Baranya) and Great Hungarian Plain (Danube region) (Soó 1966, Simon 1992).

In Hungary, this species grows in mixed oak–hornbeam forests and in riverine hardwood forests (Orno–Quercetum) and can grow in a range of soil types (Soó 1966, Simon 1992).

No germplasm accessions of M. dasyphylla are reported by EURISCO to be held in European genebanks (EURISCO Catalogue 2010). A review of the ex situ conservation status of this species is required and germplasm collection and duplicated ex situ storage should be carried out as necessary.
