Diospyros fusicarpa occurs in New Guinea at low elevations (10 m). It is known from only three collections; one is the type collection; the other two are from the same locality, same date, and same collector and all collections are historic; made between 1938 (type) and 1956. All the collections were geo-referenced post facto, and coordinates should be regarded as estimates for locations. It is known from two unique locations, however it is not known whether these locations still represent extant subpopulations, and therefore locations are given as 1–2. It would be preferable to conduct current surveys and observations at these historic localities, including the type locality, to determine if subpopulations are extant and what their status may be. The extent of occurrence (EOO) and the area of occupancy (AOO) are both estimated at 4–8 km². The population is not well known or well documented.

Diospyros fusicarpa is known only from very few collections, therefore the threats to this species are generalized to the area of New Guinea; it is not known to occur in any formally protected areas. There are active volcanoes and the area is regularly subjected to seismic activity, and it is suspected to be impacted by climate change and extreme weather variations. Environmental degradation, habitat loss and mining pollution are the primary environmental challenges. Road and housing development, as well as exploitation of forestry resources, and the clearing of land for agricultural development has led to the loss of forest cover and the species that live within it. Major environmental consequences have resulted from mining development, including the pollution of waterways from the disposal of mine tailings.

Diospyros fusicarpa is a tree occurring in lowland moist tropical rainforest at low elevation (10 m).  According to Iyan Robiansyah (pers. comm. 2023), the species is found in lowland areas with a high level of forest conversion.
