Diospyros pulchra occurs in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands at low elevations up to 100 m. It is known from at least 16 herbarium collections and nine unique locations with regard to the most plausible threat. The extent of occurrence (EOO) is estimated at 518,781 km² and the area of occupancy (AOO) at 52 km². The collections used for this assessment date from 1958–1981 (only two from the 1980s), there are no recent collections or documentation and the population structure of D. pulchra is not well known. It is uncertain whether these localities still represent extant subpopulations. It is not known to occur in any formally protected areas.

Diospyros pulchra is subject to threat from active volcanoes and the area is regularly subjected to seismic activity, and it is suspected to be impacted by climate change and extreme weather variations. Environmental degradation, habitat alteration and loss and mining pollution are the primary environmental challenges. Road and housing development (urbanization), as well as exploitation of forestry resources, wildlife hunting and trade, and the clearing of land for agricultural development (timber or oil palm production) has led to the loss of forest cover and the species that live within it. Major environmental consequences have resulted from large dam projects and mining development, including the pollution of waterways from the disposal of mine tailings. Climate change occurs as a direct result of air pollution and the greenhouse effect, which in turn is caused by the emission of greenhouse gases and haze stemming from widespread deforestation (burning). Low-lying areas near the coastline are under threat from current sea level rise.

Diospyros pulchra is a small treelet or tree to 6 m and occurs in lowland moist tropical rainforest, both primary and secondary vegetation. In the Solomon Islands, it is found mainly in well-drained soils.
