Despite the little information available on this species, it is assessed as Least Concern due to its wide range.

This species is present in the Amazon and Orinoco River basins and north and eastern Guiana Shield rivers (Jegu 2003). These basins span Brazil, Colombia (Bejarano et al. 2006, Maldonado-Ocampo and Usma 2006), Peru (Fricke et al. 2023), French Guiana (Planquette et al. 1996), Guyana (Jegu 2003), Suriname (Planquette et al. 1996) and Venezuela. The presence in Colombia, specifically the Mesay River, is associated with high water (Bejarano et al. 2006). 

There is no information about any population parameter, but this species seems to be common and widely distributed in the Amazon and Orinoco rivers basins.

There are no apparent threats to this species. However, since this is a migrant species, dam construction could affect the species in the near future.

This species does not have any conservation measures in place. There is a lack of basic information for this species, regarding its biology (feeding habits and reproduction), ecology and population trends; further research is recommended.
