Daphniola dione is a European endemic species that is known from a single locality on Lefkada Island, Greece. It is known from a cave spring and its area of occupancy (AOO) is estimated at 4 km². The on-going drought due to climate change will dry out in a short time the cave spring causing habitat loss and, consequently, the extinction of the population of this species. This threat will drive the species to Extinct (EX) in a very short time. Therefore, D. dione is listed as Vulnerable (VU D2).

This is a recently described endemic species from western Greece, where it is known from a single (type) locality on Lefkada Island in the Ionian Sea (Radea et al. 2021).

There is no information available on population size or trends. Twenty specimens were collected from the type locality (Radea et al. 2021). Mature specimens (some of them carried one egg capsule attached to the umbilicus) as well as immature specimens were found.

All specimens were collected from a spring emerging inside a cave (Radea et al. 2021). Live specimens of the new species were found crawling on the roots of woody plants reaching the bottom of the spring (Radea et al. 2021).

Whilst Lefkada is a densely populated island and a popular summer tourist destination, the type locality of this species is not currently considered vulnerable to anthropogenic stressors because it is located in a hilly and woody area far away from villages, cultivations and tourism infrastructures (Radea et al. 2021). However, this species has a very restricted distribution. The on-going climate change is expected to increase the probability of a series of years with severe drought dramatically affecting the quantity of subterranean water. D. dione meets VU D2 because this plausible event will cause this species to be listed as CR or EX.

The species is not utilized.

The area where this endemic species was found is not protected by any national and international legislation. The single known locality of this species is not included in any protected area.

Research on the distribution as well as the ecology, population size and trends of D. dione is needed. Additionally, the trends of the sensitive habitat of this species should be monitored.
