Ononis antennata is found in coastal areas of Algeria and Morocco. There is no precise information relating to the population status of this species. The area in which the taxon occurs is known to be threatened by human activities such as urban development and conversion of land for agriculture. The taxon does not currently meet the criteria for a threatened category and thus a rating of Least Concern is given. Further surveys and monitoring are encouraged over a longer period of time to make sure that the taxon does not fall into a threatened category in near future.

O. antennata occupies areas of Mediterranean type grassland and Mediterranean littoral and maritime vegetation in sandy fields and on gravel by rivers.

The area in which the taxon occurs is subject to fairly intense anthropogenic pressure due to a high human population. Urban development, agriculture and other activities such as quarrying are all threats within this region. A lot of the natural vegetation has been converted to agricultural land. These human pressures have decreased the resilience of the habitat to withstand extensive periods of drought for example. It is not known what impact these threats have on the taxon.

This taxon is not known to occur within the protected areas network. Seeds have yet to be collected by a seed bank as a method of ex situ conservation. This taxon would benefit from a long term monitoring program to ensure that it does not experience a population decline.
