Astragalus davuricus (Pallas) DC. Is often found as a synonym of Astragalus stevenianus DC. but its accepted synonym is A. davuricus K.Koch, leading to confusion.

Astragalus stevenianus is listed as Least Concern. The range does not meet the thresholds for a threatened rating, it is known to occur in protected areas and no major threats are known at present.

Species distributed in temperate Asia, from Western Asia to Caucasus. Due to taxonomy issues (there are two species under apparently same name but with different authors, therefore, different species) there is confussion about the synonomy of the species. As a result of this, the distribution of the species might be confused including specimens of the overlaping species A. davuricus (Pallas) DC.

The total population size is not known, but recent surveys in 2008 suggest 60 plants from Georgia in the middle of its range (MSBP 2010).

A. stevenianus is a perennial erect herb that occurs in dry stony, gravelly and clayey slopes. Recent surveys in Georgia in 2008 reported the species from pasture land, in semidesert, associated with Artemisia lerchiana, Dianthus inamoenus, Kochia prostrata, Erysimum caucasicum and Malcolmia taraxacifolia (MSB 2010).

There are no known major threats to this species.

Triterpenoids have been found in Astragalus stevenianus (Sokolov 1987).

Althougth there are many protected area throughought its range. The species has been only reported from within one, Zuvandinskiy Nature Sanctuary in Azerbaijan. Seeds have been collected as part of several seed bank projects such as Millennium Seed Bank Project, United States National Plant Germplasm System Collection, Laboratory of Plants Gene Pool and Breeding in Armenia and Institute of Botany of Armenia. It is known to occur in two Botanical Gardens.
