Stiobia nana has been assessed as Vulnerable under criterion D2 as this species is endemic only to Coldwater Spring, Calhoun County, Alabama (area of occupancy 0.4-4 km²) and is therefore susceptible to random events that could cause its extirpation. Furthermore, the spring has been impounded (prior to the species' description) and is used as a municipal water source (ongoing). Whether this is causing any declines in the species at present is unknown, as no population trend information exists, However, increased stress on the population as a result of the single site being a municipal water source could have devastating effects on this species. Future research is recommended to ascertain the population status and assess the severity of threats to inform specific conservation actions and aid future reassessments of this species.

This species is apparently endemic to Coldwater Spring, Calhoun County, Alabama (Mirarchi 2004), a single location with an area of occupancy of 0.4-4 km².

This species is endemic to Coldwater Spring, west of Oxford, Calhoun County, Alabama (Mirarchi 2004, Thompson and McCaleb 1978, Burch 1989). It was not found in adjacent springs and spring runs in Calhoun County and nearby (Thompson and McCaleb 1978). Population trends for this species are currently unknown (NatureServe 2009).

Snails are found only on cobbles and pebbles over a clear bottom in the spring run. They are not found on aquatic vegetation, or on the substrate in the quiet water along the side of the spring run, nor in the spring pool (Thompson and McCaleb1978).

The only known spring where this species occurs is impounded as a municipal water source for the city of Anniston and used as a water supply for Calhoun County, Alabama. The impoundment forms a large pool, and has a spring run ca. 150 m long that flows into Coldwater Creek from a brecciated zone in the Jacksonville Fault in the Weisner Formation (Thompson and McCaleb 1978). The impoundment occurred prior to its description and population trends are unknown for this species. Increased stress on the population as a result of the single site being a municipal water source could have devastating effects on this species. Furthermore, because of its restricted range, the species is susceptible to random events that could be deleterious to the species as a whole.

This species is not utilized.

There are no conservation measures in place. Monitoring of threat processes and further research to ascertain the population trends of this species is recommended.
