This species was described from a subterranean stream in Luoping, Yunnan, China. It is only known from a single type specimen. Extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated to be 4 km², and a single location is inferred. Since its collection in 1998, the type locality where this species occurred historically has been destroyed in its entirety due to urbanization. Therefore, this species is assessed as Critically Endangered, Possibly Extinct, under criterion B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii). Additional ichthyological surveys in all potentially suitable habitat surrounding the type locality will be necessary to determine if this species is still extant.
