The family Gammaridae is a large monophyletic group with a complicated taxonomy. A nomenclatural review of the taxonomic status of Pectenogammarus Reid, 1940 was conducted based on Hou & Sket (2016) and Sket & Hou (2018) phylogenetic proposals. These authors used the name Homoeogammarus Schellenberg, 1937 for a set of morphologicallydiverse taxa previously included mainly within Echinogammarus Stebbing, 1899. The use of the name Homoeogammarus Schellenberg, 1937 is problematic. As a result of a detailed bibliographic review, García-París et al. (2023) proposed the name Pectenogammarus Reid, 1940 (stat. nov.) for the “Homoeogammarus” clade (Sket & Hou 2018). As a result Echinogammarus platvoeti (Pinkster, 1993) is now accepted as Pectenogammarus platvoeti (Pinkster, 1993). For more details see García-París, M.; Jurado-Angulo, P.; Rodríguez-Flores, P. Pectenogammarus platvoeti is an endemic gammarid species of Crete island found only in two locations. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 7,404 km² and its area of occupancy (AOO) is 8 km². There is no information about the status of its population. Threats to the species include, habitat loss, waterflow reduction, water abstraction for tourism and agriculture and pollution mainly from agriculture and touristic activities. Urban and tourism development in the surroundings of the wells from the species has been collected has been increasing for several decades. Therefore, this species is assessed as Endangered (EN B2ab(iii)).

Pectenogammarus platvoeti Pinkster 1993 is a freshwater gammarid, endemic to Crete Island (Hupalo et al. 2018, 2020, 2021).

There is not any recent information on the population size and abundance of the species.

The species seems to be habitat specific as it has only been found in a lagoon and an estuary. However since it has been recently described the ecology of this species is unknown.

Populations of the species are threatened by water abstraction for agriculture and domestic use. In addition, organic (e.g. olive mill wastewater, untreated sewage), nutrient (fertilisers) and agrochemical (pesticides) pollution is a serious threat that may also result in population losses. Finally, the ongoing climate warming will further result in the decline of available habitats (water scarcity) in the future.

There are no conservation actions in place for this species, however it does occur within protected areas.
