Acherontacarus raphani is a water mite species, currently only known from two riparian springs in the Peloponnese and Epirus regions of Greece. Its current known area of occupancy (AOO) is 8 km²; extent of occurrence (EOO), based on areas of level 12 HydroBASINS occupied by the species, is 3,871 km², and it is known from two locations, meeting the thresholds for Endangered under criteria B1a and B2a. However, currently it is not known if the species is experiencing a continuing decline in the quality or extent of its habitat so criterion B cannot be used. Droughts and abstraction of water for agricultural and domestic use, can potentially restrict the suitable habitat and species viability, but these are unlikely to make the species Extinct or Critically Endangered in a short time. It is therefore assessed as Near Threatened (NT; almost meets criteria B and D2).

Acherontacarus raphani is known from only from two riparian springs in Peloponnese and Epirus in Greece (Gerecke and Benfatti 2004).

Acherontacarus raphani occurs in sandy riparian springs of mountain streams (Gerecke and Benfatti 2004). Water mites of the genus Acherontacarus have post-larval stages free-living, while larvae are parasitic on aquatic beetles of the families Dytiscidae and Hydraenidae (Benfatti and Gerecke 1999).

Currently there no documented threats, however droughts and abstraction of water for agricultural and domestic use can potentially restrict the suitable habitat of the species.
