Lolium scholzii Greuter (Greek endemic) is considered a valid species by Valdés and Scholz (2009+) but as a synonym of L. rigidum by POWO (2023); we follow at present Valdés and Scholz (2009+) in considering L. scholzii a separate valid species. However, the description of Lolium scholzii itself mentions doubts regarding its validity (Greuter 2012), so this may be revised in the future.

Almost nothing is known about the exact habitat and the population size of Lolium scholzii. It is only known from one collection from the western foothills of Mt. Taigetos (Peloponnisos, Greece). The species may be a weed of cultivated land, but this is not known for certain. No information about any possible continuing decline of its population is available. However, cultivated fields are prone to drastic changes. A single action (e.g., an extensive use of herbicides) could perhaps eliminate the whole population of Lolium scholzii. If something has already happened, then the single population of Lolium scholzii may have already become extinct. In the absence of any further information, the species is currently considered Vulnerable (VU D2) because of its restricted area of occupancy, and occurrence in a single location with a potential future threats that could drive the species to Critically Endangered or Extinct within a very short time. More information on this species is certainly needed.

Lolium scholzii is a local Greek endemic only known from the locality (the Taigetos Pass) in the western foothills of Mt. Taigetos (Peloponnisos, southern Greek mainland). The species has been collected only once (Greuter 2012).

Population details of Lolium scholzii are not known.

According to Greuter (2012), the species probably grows as a weed of cultivated fields. However, Greuter did not see the species in the wild, the type specimens were collected as part of a sample of Trifolium resupinatum, and so the habitat is actually uncertain (Greuter 2012).

Although the environment or natural habitat of Lolium scholzii is unclear, it could be very unstable. The species could be eliminated in case of a drastic change in cultivation methods and/or the use of herbicides. Furthermore, if it relies on cultivated land, its habitat may deteriorate if cultivation ceases in the future.

The species is not utilised.

No conservation actions are known for this species. The only known locality is close to two Natura 2000 sites [Oros Taygetos - Lagkada Trypis (GR2550009; Birds Directive) and Oros Taygetos Spilaio Trachilas Spilaio Vatsinidi (GR2550006; (Habitats Directive)], but presence of this species within a protected area requires confirmation. Research is required to confirm the current distribution, population size, population trend and habitats of this species.
