This is a very local and endemic species, restricted to fewer than five locations. No accurate data are available on its area of occupancy, but it is suspected to be below 500km². The population was reported to be in decline at the last assessment (van Swaay and Warren 1999: 15-25% decline in 25 years), but no recent information is available from this conflict zone in Crimea, although it is plausible that this decline still continues. Therefore it is listed as still Endangered as a precaution within Europe and should be reassessed when new information is available. It is not recorded in the EU 27 region.

This species is endemic to the European region where it occurs only in Crimea, Ukraine.

This is a local species, restricted to (semi-) natural areas. Declines in distribution or population size of 6-30% were reported in the last assessment (van Swaay and Warren, 1999), but no new recent data are available from this conflict zone.

This butterfly occurs in Ukraine on the Crimean mountain steppes and in pine forests on a limestone mountain area covered by grassland. The foodplant is Stipa pennata. Habitats include alpine and subalpine grasslands (50%), inland cliffs and exposed rocks (50%) (van Swaay et al. 2006).

Subpopulations of this species are reported to be threatened by tourist activities and fires.

All butterflies are collected to some extent, but only for the extremely rare species can it be a problem and the trade in Europe is generally at a low level compared to other continents. There is no specific trade information for this species.

More research is needed on the distribution and ecology of the species. Suitable habitats should be protected and appropriately managed. The effects of conservation actions should be monitored by a butterfly monitoring scheme. In Ukraine the type-locality is under protection in the Ialta state reserve.
