This tree or shrub species is only known from three scattered localities from southern Nigeria and southwest Cameroon. It grows in lowland evergreen forest, and these forests are under threat of deforestation and habitat destruction. This species has a small extent of occurrence (EOO of 4,248 km²) and a small area of occupancy (AOO of 12 km²). The AOO is based on collections only and this species is likely to be under collected. However, given our present knowledge about this species, the AOO is unlikely to exceed 500 km². Given that it is only known from three locations, that it has a small AOO, and the threats to its habitat, it is considered as Endangered.

This tree or shrub species is found in extremely small, discrete locations in lowland evergreen forests of southern Nigeria and southwest Cameroon. It is known to occur or to have occurred in three areas. The type specimen (Preuss #1272) was collected in 1894 from Mt Cameroon in a forest between Victoria and Bimbia. In the same area (Mabeta-Moliwe), several unidentified specimens of Beilschmiedia were collected in 1992 (Baker #226 and Hunt #14) which could be this species. Two collections were made in the Lake Tissongo area (Cameroon) by Doyle (s.n.) and McKay (#52) in 1975, and a third locality from Nigeria in the Cross River National Park (Oban division).

A fourth locally was reported from Bioko, Equatorial Guinea (between Utonde and Punta Mbonda and Mepemba) by Aedo et al. (1999), but its identification could not be checked.

No information is known about the population size and trends of this species.

This is an understory forest shrub or small tree in the lowland evergreen forest in southwest Cameroon and within Cross River National Park, southern Nigeria.

The main threat to the species is forest clearance for small-holder agriculture, housing and plantations of Hevea and Elaeis. There have been reports of destruction of the forest in the Bimbia-Bonadikombe area. The subpopulation in the Lac Tissongo area is unprotected and next to the biggest city in Cameroon. The subpopulation from the Cross River National Park, Nigeria, has some protection, but despite that the area is still being slowly cleared.

There is no information on use or trade of this species.

This species is known to occur in two protected areas. This species is not kept in any ex situ collection (BGCI 2021). The identification of the various specimens from Mt Cameroon and Bioko is an urgent priory.
