At present, the population of this species appears to be stable. However, African cycads have tended to decline rapidly once they become the targets of collectors. The narrow distribution and small number of locations means that it could qualify as threatened if populations started to decline, and could quickly be driven to a high extinction risk. Therefore, it is assessed as Vulnerable D2.

This species occurs in the northern Tanzanian province of Arusha and in the south-eastern parts of the Loita Plains, near Olmesutye (near Nguruman escarpment) in Kenya. The Tanzanian subpopulations are found west of Lake Natron and east of the town of Loliondo. It is recorded from 1,300 to 2,090 masl.

It is very difficult to accurately estimate numbers of plants in the wild due to the inaccessible terrain, but it is estimated that there are in excess of 10,000 plants.

Subpopulations occur in open bushland on quartzite ridges or montane forest with a few scattered trees. The Nguruman hills consist of a series of quartzite hills.

As with most species within this genus, it is susceptible to over collecting for ornamental purposes. The seeds of this species are eaten during times of famine. Too frequent fires to create grazing areas may be a threat to this species (Maundu et al. 2001).

This species is listed in Appendix I of the CITES Appendices. Identification of suitable sites for the formal protection of this species is needed. An education and awareness programme as well as the long-term monitoring of subpopulations will support the conservation of this species.
