Trachyandra peculiaris is assessed as Endangered under criterion B2 as it is only known from two locations one of which is experiencing ongoing loss of habitat as a result of quarrying for stone and gravel. It has a known area of occupancy (AOO) of 8 km² but has only been recorded twice, both times in the 1920s. It is a small cryptic species that may be more widespread. However, from known information it is restricted to the Sperrgebiet area of Namibia. More research is required to better understand the current status of the population.

This species  is endemic to Namibia with a restricted range. It is only known from the type specimen collected at Haalenberg in the Namib Naukluft National Park (NNNP) and a second specimen that was collected from near Chameis in the Tsau //Khaeb (Sperrgebiet) National Park (TKNP).  It is geographically isolated from its closely related sister species Trachyandra hispida which occurs in the Western Cape province South Africa (Obermeyer 1962).

It is only known from two herbarium collections made in the 1920s by Dinter. According to Obermeyer (1962), at one of these subpopulations Dinter found only four plants which were in fruit which could be an indication that it occurs as small localised stands of plants. It is suspected to be under collected and a few more subpopulations are likely to occur in intervening habitat between the two known records. The population is inferred to be declining as a result of habitat loss to stone quarrying.

This species grows primarily in desert or dry shrubland habitats, and was recorded from steep hot slopes (Obermeyer 1962).

The one subpopulation recorded from Haalenberg is inferred to have declined as a result of ongoing stone and gravel quarrying. The intervening habitat between the only two recorded subpopulations falls within the Tsau//Khaeb National Park (TKNP) where there is a proposed green hydrogen project which may lead to further loss and degradation of habitat.

The entire population is found in the Namib Naukluft National Park and the Tsau//Khaeb National Park (TKNP). Since it is only known from collections made 100 years ago, there is an urgent need for surveys to assess the current status of the population.
