The Pointy-nosed Blue Chimaera (Hydrolagus trolli) is a large (at least 121 cm total length) deepwater chimaera known from southern Australia, Lord Howe Rise, New Zealand, and New Caledonia in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean. It is recorded on the continental and insular slopes at depths of 612–1,707 m, and mostly at depths below 1,000 m. The Pointy-nosed Blue Chimaera is infrequently reported as bycatch in deepwater trawl fisheries in New Zealand and was considered at low risk from fishing because it occurs at depths beyond most fishing effort. It occurs beyond the depths of current fisheries in Australia. Its preference for areas of steep vertical rocky relief further precludes its capture. Further information is required on its distribution, ecology, and life history. At this time, global population trend is suspected to be stable based on refuge in deep water outside of current fishing activities and the Pointy-nosed Blue Chimaera is assessed as Least Concern.

The Pointy-nosed Blue Chimaera is known from southern Australia (Victoria), Lord Howe Rise, New Zealand (West Norfolk Ridge to Campbell Plateau), and New Caledonia in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (Robert et al. 2015). The species may be more widespread through the South Pacific and Eastern and Central North Pacific (Didier et al. 2012, Ebert 2016, Reichert et al. 2016, Jew et al. 2019).

There are no data available on population size, trends, and structure. Global population trend is suspected to be stable based on refuge in deep water outside of current fishing activities.

The Pointy-nosed Blue Chimaera occurs on the continental and insular slopes at depths of 612–1,707 m, and mostly at depths below 1,000 m (Kemper et al. 2015). Habitat preference reveals this species prefers areas of steep rocky relief associated with seamounts and submerged volcanic craters (Ebert 2016, Reichert et al. 2016, D.A. Ebert, unpub. data). Maximum size is at least 121 cm total length (TL; 91 cm body length, BDL), males mature at ~60–65 cm BDL and females mature at ~55 cm BDL (Compagno and Dagit 2015). Reproduction is oviparous. Nothing else is known of its biology.

The Pointy-nosed Blue Chimaera is infrequently reported as bycatch in deepwater trawl fisheries in New Zealand (e.g., Anderson and Finucci 2022). The species was considered at low risk from fishing because it occurs at depths beyond most fishing effort (Ford et al. 2015). In Australia, it occurs beyond the depth of any commercial fisheries. It has not been reported from the Commonwealth Southern and Eastern Scalefish and Shark Fishery, even prior to the closure of trawling in waters deeper than 700 m (Patterson et al. 2022).

This species is not known to be utilized.
