The EU's EUNIS system lists this species as a synonym of Succisella microcephala (Willk.) Beck.

This European endemic species has an area of occupancy (AOO) of c.136 km² with an extent of occurrence (EOO) of 1,340 km². The species occurs in a small number of localities, considered to represent five or fewer locations based on drought as the primary threat, as well as over-grazing. One subpopulation has disappeared (Mesones) and the subpopulation in the Sierras de Segura has not been found recently. Therefore, this species has been assessed as Endangered [EN B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v)] based on the restricted AOO, EOO, and number of locations, and with a continuing decline in the quality of habitat and the number of mature individuals.

Succisella andreae-molinae is endemic to scattered localities across the Sierra de Segura of Jaen (Hornos and Siles) and Albacete (Mesones and Riopar), and north of Granada (Huéscar).

Succisella andreae-molinae has been recorded from a number of localities across its known range, with an overall population of 430 individuals. The localities are Arroyo del Padroncillo (Albacee), Cortijo de la Fuente del Charco (Jaen), La Canalica (Jaen) and Rio Huesca (Granada).

The best-conserved population, due to the naturalness of the community, is the one in the Huesca River catchment and it holds 85% of the total individuals. The population of Mesones has disappeared, probably because of the polluted water that flooded the reedbed. The species has also been observed in the Sierras de Segura, near the Madera River. Although no populations were found in this location, another population was found nearby in La Calanica (Jaen). Finally, in some localities near Madera River, where the species has been recorded through phytosociological studies and no samples have been collected, there might be confusion with Cephalaria leucantha which is morphologically similar.

This species grows in reedbeds and grasslands of the Molinio-Holoschoenion vulgaris, in stream banks and mountain springs in light soils with abundant organic matter and permanently saturated (hydromorph). It is normally accompanied by Arctium minus, Brachypodium phoenicoides, Cirsium rosulatum, Epilobium hirsutum, Mentha longifolia, Peucedanum hispanicum, Pulicaria dysenterica, Luzula spp., Scirpus holoschoenus, Schoenus nigricans, Senecio laderoi, etc. There is not much information available about its ecology. It is known that it flowers in summer, it can reproduce vegetatively and that it is an anemophilous species.

Due to its summer flowering period, this species depends directly on annual rainfall. Moreover, high grazing pressures in summer lead to the degradation of its habitat, due to soil nitrification, and to the mutilation of the flowering plants. The low number of individuals in some populations also poses an important threat. The subpopulation in Fuente del Charco is probably the most threatened due to intensive grazing.

There is no evidence that this species is used.

Succisella andreae-molinae was assessed as Endangered in the Spanish national Red List (Bañares et al. 2004, Moreno 2008).

This species grows within the Natural Park and SCI (Site of Community Interest) of Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas (Jaen), and in Sierras del Nordeste (Jaen) and Sierras de Alcaraz y de Segura y del Mundo (Albacete) which are also SCIs. It has been listed as Vulnerable in the Regional Catalogue of threatened species of Castilla-La Mancha (Decree 200/ 2001 DOCM nº 119).

It is recommended to include the species in the Andalucian Catalogue of Threatened Species, to monitor and control grazing pressures, to monitor existent populations, and to store samples in genome resource banks.
